Freshman Quarterback Sparks Michigan's Crucial Victory Over Penn State
Tommy Carr replaced Bryce Underwood in the second half and led the Wolverines to a key Big Ten win.
Michigan secured a vital Big Ten victory over Penn State at the Big House, with freshman quarterback Tommy Carr emerging as a second-half catalyst for the Wolverines' offense. Carr's performance marked a significant shift for Michigan, who entered the matchup with a 0-2 record in conference play.
Penn State struck first with a 24-yard field goal on their opening drive. The Nittany Lions controlled possession for much of the first half, but their advantage was cut short when freshman Josiah Zayas intercepted a pass from Michigan's Bryce Underwood in the red zone. Underwood threw a second interception in the first half, prompting Michigan to bring Carr into the game.
Carr's initial drive was a quick three-and-out. However, Penn State's subsequent possession ended with an interception on the first play, returning the ball to Carr with favorable field position. Bryson Kuzdzal then scored on a 43-yard run, putting Michigan on the board. Later in the quarter, Carr was instrumental in getting the Wolverines to the Penn State 1-yard line, leading to a touchdown run by Jordan Marshall.
In the fourth quarter, Penn State closed the gap with a touchdown and a successful two-point conversion, making it a one-possession game. However, with five minutes remaining, Rocco Becht fumbled the ball while scrambling, and Michigan recovered. This turnover set up Carr's first career touchdown, a 12-yard run. Penn State responded with a touchdown pass from Becht to Chase Sowell, who recorded 11 catches for 151 yards. However, Michigan recovered an onside kick attempt, sealing the victory.
Carr completed 5 of 7 passes for 47 yards in the second half, all of which came after he entered the game. The win is crucial for Michigan as they aim to build momentum. The Wolverines are scheduled to play the Indiana Hoosiers next, while Penn State will have a bye week before facing Purdue.
