French Rookies Marine Fauthoux and Pauline Astier Show Promise for Liberty's Future

The New York Liberty's WNBA semifinal series against the Atlanta Dream concluded with an early exit, but the performances of French rookies Marine Fauthoux and Pauline Astier provided a hopeful outlook for the team's future.

Fauthoux, who began the season on a developmental contract and returned from a year-long layoff due to a knee injury, significantly increased her impact as the season progressed. She signed her first standard contract in August and became a key contributor during the playoff series. In Game 2 against the Dream, Fauthoux recorded 20 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Her playing time in Game 3, where she played nearly the entire second half, indicated the trust coach Chris DeMarco placed in her during high-stakes moments.

Veteran teammate Sabrina Ionescu lauded Fauthoux's resilience and hard work. "I think you saw what she’s been able to do," Ionescu said. "She hasn’t played basketball in a year, coming back from injury and to be able to witness the hard work that she put in all through training camp every single day, it’s a testament of just the players that we have here, their love for the game, their love for this organization but also just how everyone’s so important."

Fauthoux is under contract through the next season, suggesting she will have an opportunity to build on her playoff experience and potentially secure a larger role in the team's rotation.

Pauline Astier also emerged as a significant contributor, stepping into a more prominent role due to Liberty injuries. The rookie guard delivered an impressive campaign, demonstrating efficiency in finishing at the rim with a 69.5 percent success rate. Astier averaged 9.3 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game. Her ability to learn the offense quickly and penetrate the paint was crucial for the team throughout the season.

"Pauline as a rookie who came in and earned her spot, starting, and picked up players full court," Ionescu stated. "Just learned the offense with a really veteran team and kind of just found her voice and consistently got in the paint for us, and helped us win so many games. And so sky’s the limit for her, it was really fun for I know for us to watch her growth over the year."

Both Fauthoux and Astier, with their strong performances in crucial games and throughout the season, represent key pieces for the Liberty's future development.
