A French technology company, Momentum Technologies, has introduced a line of mobile survival pods, dubbed Lifepods, designed to offer protection against a variety of potential disasters. These capsules are engineered for mobility, transportability, and rapid deployment, distinguishing them from fixed disaster infrastructure.
Lifepod Configurations
The Lifepods are available in three distinct configurations, each tailored for specific threats. The pricing ranges from approximately £25,404 to £34,904 for the capsule alone.
Capsule W01 is designed for two to four people and intended for extreme weather events such as tsunamis, flash floods, coastal flooding, and dam or levee breaches. Constructed from 5083 marine-grade aluminum, it features a buoyancy system and is built to float and withstand debris impacts until rescue arrives. Tests on this model have been described as "very encouraging," though a specific release date has not yet been announced.
Capsule B01 is designed for one to two people seeking shelter from hostile environments. This model provides protection against ballistic threats, shrapnel, armed attacks, and degraded environments. It is intended for use at sensitive sites, critical infrastructure, and by security forces or industrial companies requiring a rapid, compact protection solution. The B01 is currently in its industrialization phase, with final validations expected this month. It is priced at approximately €29,000 (£24,750).
Capsule Q01 is specifically engineered to withstand earthquakes, structural collapses, and disasters related to building instability. It aims to provide a compact, accessible, and resilient refuge for areas prone to seismic activity or sudden collapses, increasing survival chances when immediate evacuation is not possible. The price for this configuration is yet to be determined.
Company Vision and Deployment
The Lifepods were showcased at the VivaTech show in Paris, where Momentum Technologies' founder, Cedric Choffat, outlined his vision for the future of personal safety solutions. Choffat stated that the market is showing strategic interest in their next-generation resilience solutions and that the company aims to accelerate industrialization, certifications, production, and commercial deployment.
The company emphasizes that the Lifepods can be containerized, helicopter-transportable, stackable, and integrated into various environments, including urban areas, industrial sites, or remote locations.
