Freddie Steward Reflects on Career Setbacks and Future Ambitions

Freddie Steward, the 25-year-old England rugby player, has spoken about navigating significant career adversity, including losing his England spot and facing criticism. He described one such period as "embarrassing - one of the lowest points of my career."

Steward was hooked before half-time in a Six Nations match against Ireland and has not played for his country since. He acknowledged the criticism of being a "one-trick pony" but has used these experiences as a "wake-up call."

"At the time, it was embarrassing for me to walk off in front of my friends and family and 80,000 people. It wasn’t a nice feeling, but you have to take it on the chin," Steward said.

Despite these challenges, Steward has emerged stronger, attributing his resilience to his upbringing and his club, Leicester. "Giving up isn’t in my nature. Part of that is testament to my upbringing. But it’s also down to this club. Dealing with setbacks and fighting back is a part of being at Leicester," he explained.

At Leicester, Steward's focus is on winning titles. "At Leicester, the expectation is to win. We're here to lift trophies. Last season, everyone said we overachieved and it was great we got to a semi-final. For us, it was a disappointment," he stated.

Looking ahead, Steward's goals include leading his boyhood team back to the top of the league and potentially playing in a second World Cup for England in Australia next year. His main rival for the full-back position is George Furbank.

Steward is described as being in a good place both on and off the field, representing an improved version of himself and remaining a significant asset for his club and potentially his country. His aerial ability was a key strength that propelled him into the England team at a young age.
