R&B singer Freddie Jackson, known for his smooth 1980s hits such as “Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake)” and “You Are My Lady,” has died at the age of 70.

A statement released by his family on Jackson's official Instagram account confirmed his death on Monday, three days after his 70th birthday. The cause of death was not provided.

“Freddie was more than a legendary voice. He was a kind, generous soul who loved his fans, his family, his friends, and his music with everything he had,” the family's statement read. “For decades he gave us the songs that became the soundtrack to our love stories, our celebrations, and our most treasured memories. That gift will live on forever.”

Jackson began his musical journey in Harlem, singing gospel at White Rock Baptist Church and performing in the New York club scene. He later joined the band Mystic Merlin before returning to New York to launch his solo career. His debut album, “Rock Me Tonight,” released in 1985, achieved platinum status and earned him two Grammy nominations: best new artist and best male R&B vocal performance for the single “You Are My Lady.”

The album’s success solidified Jackson as a prominent figure in R&B, with his songs becoming staples on contemporary urban radio throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s. His follow-up album, 1987’s “Just Like the First Time,” also went platinum.

In 2024, Jackson publicly shared his diagnosis with kidney disease, encouraging openness and resilience in facing health challenges. He partnered with the National Kidney Foundation to raise awareness about the condition, which affects millions of Americans, many of whom are unaware they have it.
