Francisco Lindor Honored with Roberto Clemente Award for Philanthropy
The Mets shortstop receives MLB's prestigious award for his extensive community involvement and charitable contributions.
New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor has been awarded the Roberto Clemente Award, recognizing his significant philanthropic efforts and community contributions. The award, considered one of Major League Baseball's most prestigious honors, celebrates players who demonstrate exceptional character, community involvement, and positive impacts both on and off the field.
Lindor, a five-time All-Star, has been nominated for the award annually since 2023. This recognition holds particular significance for the Puerto Rico native, who views the award as a reflection of his family's values and a platform to share his blessings.
His charitable endeavors are wide-ranging, including substantial donations to educational initiatives. Lindor has provided hundreds of students with school supplies annually through a partnership with New Balance and has donated over $1 million to Montverde Academy in Florida. He also launched "Lindor's Leaders," a program aimed at fostering leadership skills in Bayside High School's Sports Medicine Program.
"I didn't go to college," Lindor stated. "My education comes through the lower school, middle school, high school, and through the people I’ve met in my life that have put me in conversations, that have put me in rooms to gain knowledge. And that’s kind of the thing I do with the high school and the Lindor Leaders. I have conversations with young people that are growing and going to be the next fathers, the next mothers of the world and the next engineers, doctors, and just having conversations with them."
Further demonstrating his commitment to community support, Lindor has provided financial aid to Puerto Rico following hurricanes. He has also partnered with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals to support local children's hospitals and initiated "Lindor Smile Tuesdays" to educate children about dental hygiene. Additionally, he collaborates with Seen, a nonprofit assisting families affected by disability and medical hardship, a cause deeply personal to him.
Lindor joins a distinguished list of past Roberto Clemente Award recipients, including fellow Puerto Rican baseball stars like Carlos Delgado and Edgar Martínez. He is the first New York Mets player to receive the award since Curtis Granderson in 2016 and the fifth in the team's history. Lindor expressed his humility and honor in being part of a fraternity of players who have exemplified excellence both on and off the field.
