Fox News Reporter Amused by Trump Rally Attendee's Jonestown Comparison
A man interviewed at a Donald Trump rally in South Carolina likened the president and his supporters to the Jonestown cult, much to the reporter's surprise.
A Fox News reporter's interview at a Donald Trump rally took an unexpected turn when an attendee compared the president and his supporters to the Jonestown cult. The exchange occurred Thursday in Rock Hill, South Carolina, during a rally ahead of the November midterm elections.
Reporter Lucas Tomlinson approached a man identified as Tom, seemingly expecting a supportive statement. "Tom, why are you here this morning?" Tomlinson asked. Tom responded, "Well, in the late 70s I was a little too young to get involved and go to South America for the Jonestown massacre. But this is as close as I'll ever get. So that's why I'm here."
The reporter appeared taken aback, asking for clarification, "Wait, the Jonestown massacre?" Tom affirmed, "That's right. Nothing like seeing a cult right up front, man."
Tomlinson, with a smile, then informed viewers that the man was not a Trump supporter before ending the interview. The comment referenced the 1978 Jonestown massacre in Guyana, where over 900 people died under the direction of cult leader Jim Jones, a tragedy often associated with the phrase "drinking the Kool-Aid" to describe blind loyalty.
Trump was in Rock Hill to support Senate candidate Darline Graham and South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson, who is running for governor.
