Fox News Marks 30 Years, Influencing Global Dialogue and Ratings
Launched in 1996, the network has grown to reach 60 million homes and significantly impacts political discourse.
Fox News Channel is celebrating its 30th anniversary on October 7, marking three decades since its launch in 1996. Founded by Rupert Murdoch, the network has become a dominant force in cable news, significantly influencing political and global conversations and consistently leading its rivals in viewership.
Initially reaching approximately 10 million U.S. homes and under 500,000 in New York City at its launch, Fox News now broadcasts into more than 60 million U.S. homes and is viewed in 90 countries. The network is credited with not only challenging established news organizations but also for setting the agenda in political circles from local government to Washington D.C. and internationally.
Fox News has positioned itself as a conservative media outlet, often taking a critical stance on policies and actions of Democratic administrations and governors in blue states. The network has highlighted issues such as urban crime and homelessness and has been noted for its coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic, including giving airtime to the Wuhan lab-leak hypothesis, a perspective that has since gained broader scientific and media consideration.
Beyond its news reporting, popular programs such as "The Five," "Hannity," and "Gutfeld!" have garnered significant audiences. Fox News Media CEO Suzanne Scott, who took leadership in 2018, has overseen continued growth in viewership, with the channel reportedly outperforming its cable competitors by a 2-to-1 margin.
Launched with skepticism from some quarters who doubted its longevity, Fox News has overcome early challenges to establish a significant presence in the media landscape. Its impact is measured not only in ratings but also in its role in shaping public discourse and political narratives.
