Fox Business host Jackie DeAngelis is suing Whole Foods, alleging she suffered severe, permanent injuries and disfigurement after being attacked by a pit bull in a Manhattan store in September 2023. The lawsuit, filed in August, states that DeAngelis was shopping at the Whole Foods located at 10 Columbus Circle when the incident occurred.
DeAngelis, co-host of "The Big Money Show," claims the grocery chain failed to enforce its own policy prohibiting pets, other than service animals, from entering the store. According to the lawsuit, the retailer allowed the dog to remain in the store, leading to her alleged mauling. "As a result of the occurrence, [DeAngelis] sustained injuries to her body, including significant scarring and disfigurement, together with pain, suffering and emotional distress," the suit states. Police told the New York Post that a black pit bull bit DeAngelis on her left hand, but the dog and its owner had fled by the time officers arrived.
The lawsuit alleges that Whole Foods "failed to reasonably enforce its own policies, practices and/or procedures concerning animals entering and remaining within the subject store." Whole Foods' website states that while it has a "No Pets" policy, service animals are welcome.
DeAngelis, 46, has undergone surgical treatment for the injuries and is seeking unspecified damages. She joined Fox Business in April 2019 and previously spent 13 years at CNBC. She holds a Juris Doctor degree from Rutgers Law School and a bachelor's degree from Cornell University.
According to the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 4.5 million people are bitten by dogs each year in the United States, with about 800,000 requiring medical attention. The nonprofit organization Animals 24-7 reported 84 dog-related deaths in the U.S. and Canada last year, with roughly 64 of those fatalities involving pit bulls.
