Fourteen Individuals Convicted in London Teen's Fatal Stabbing
Convictions for manslaughter and violent disorder follow a fatal attack outside a McDonald's, with evidence including social media posts and CCTV.
Fourteen individuals have been convicted in connection with the death of 17-year-old Yeray Sanchez Morales, who was fatally stabbed outside a McDonald's restaurant in London. The convictions include manslaughter and violent disorder, stemming from an attack that occurred on August 27 of the previous year.
Morales suffered nine wounds to the neck and chest and died in the hospital a week later. His friend, who was with him during the attack, stated they did not know why they were targeted. Detectives pieced together the events using CCTV footage, distinctive clothing worn by the suspects, and crucial evidence from social media, which included images of bloodied hands and knives posted by the perpetrators. Voice notes also linked some of the suspects to the crime.
On Friday, four men and three boys were convicted of various offenses. Christhofer Jesus Vasquez, 18, was sentenced to four years in jail for manslaughter and a concurrent one-year sentence for possession of a bladed article. Andres Tapia Londono, 18, also received a four-year sentence for manslaughter. Isaac Ros Ramirez, 18, and Juan Betancourt Hoyos, 21, were convicted of violent disorder and received community orders. Three 16-year-old boys were also convicted of violent disorder, with sentences ranging from 16 months in jail to a 12-month youth rehabilitation order and community orders.
Morales, originally from Lanzarote, Spain, had moved to London with his mother about a decade prior. His mother described him as a sensitive, happy, polite, and generous young man who loved to dance and sing and aspired to become a PE teacher. His father recounted that Morales had intervened to defend a friend during the attack, which involved a larger group of about 30 individuals.
Detective Sergeant Debbie Barge, who led the investigation, highlighted the swift actions of the detectives in tracking down the suspects. The investigation involved appeals for information, obtaining mobile phone footage from witnesses, and analyzing local CCTV. The use of DNA evidence from a bottle used in the attack further linked one individual to the crime. Barge expressed condolences to Morales's family and hoped the convictions would bring them some peace.
