Fourteen Convicted in Fatal London McDonald's Stabbing
Two teenagers received jail sentences for manslaughter, while others were convicted of violent disorder following a fatal assault outside a fast-food restaurant.
Fourteen individuals have been convicted in connection with the stabbing death of a 17-year-old boy outside a McDonald's restaurant in London. The attack, which occurred on August 27 of the previous year on Old Kent Road in southeast London, resulted in the death of Yeray Sanchez Morales a week later from nine wounds to the neck and chest.
Detectives utilized social media posts, including images of bloodied hands and knives, along with CCTV footage and distinctive clothing, to identify and apprehend the suspects. Voice notes also linked the group to the crime. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that witnesses were crucial in piecing together the events of that night.
On Friday, Christhofer Jesus Vasquez, 18, and Andres Tapia Londono, 18, were convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to four years in prison each. Vasquez had previously pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed article and received a concurrent one-year sentence.
Isaac Ros Ramirez, 18, Juan Betancourt Hoyos, 21, and three 16-year-old boys were convicted of violent disorder. Ros Ramirez and Hoyos received community orders. One 16-year-old was sentenced to 16 months in jail, another received a 12-month youth rehabilitation order, and a third, who admitted to violent disorder, grievous bodily harm, and possession of a bladed article in relation to a second victim, was given a community order.
Morales, originally from Lanzarote, Spain, had moved to London with his mother about a decade prior. His father described him as having pursued opportunities in London, pursuing a sport science course with aspirations of becoming a PE teacher. His mother, Elena Morales, remembered him as a sensitive, happy, polite, and generous young man who loved to dance and sing, with his whole life ahead of him.
Detective Sergeant Debbie Barge, who led the investigation, stated that the killing was a cruel act of violence that shocked the community. She commended the witnesses for their cooperation and expressed hope that the convictions would bring some degree of peace to Morales's family.
