Armed officers with West Midlands Police apprehended four men and recovered a loaded handgun and swords from a vehicle. The arrests followed an investigation into a violent assault that occurred three days prior, during which a construction worker was severely beaten with metal poles.
The victim sustained broken legs and an arm, requiring hospitalization for surgery. The suspects fled the scene in a white BMW, which police tracked to the Black Country Route.
Body-worn camera footage captured the moment police intercepted the BMW. Officers used two patrol cars to block the vehicle and surrounded it. After the occupants refused to exit, police smashed the car windows to gain access. As the suspects were removed from the vehicle, a loaded handgun was visible in the footwell. The weapon contained 11 rounds, and additional swords were found in the back of the car.
The four men were arrested and subsequently sentenced at Wolverhampton Crown Court on July 9. Gurwinder Singh, 25, of Ealing, London, received a sentence of five years and 11 months for admitting possession of a firearm, ammunition, and five swords. Harpandeep Singh, 23, of Hackney, London, was jailed for seven years after being found guilty of firearm and ammunition charges and admitting possession of swords. Harshehajdeep Singh, 21, of Ealing, London, was sentenced to six years and eight months after being found guilty of possession of the firearm, ammunition, and swords. Zorawar Singh, 31, with no fixed address, received a six-year and two-month sentence for admitting possession of a firearm, ammunition, and five swords.
Detective Constable Kyle Bowering of the Major Crime Unit stated that the investigation led to the recovery of a loaded gun and swords that likely would have been used to harm others. He added that these weapons have been removed from the streets and the individuals responsible have been incarcerated.
