Four people were hospitalized following a crane collapse at a Miami construction site Monday morning, officials said. The incident occurred shortly after 8 a.m. in the Brickell neighborhood. Miami Fire Chief Robert Hevia reported that the crane, a piling rig, fell onto a street adjacent to the construction site, striking a car and a storage container. A woman driving the car was able to reverse and exit her vehicle just before the crane landed on it, according to Hevia. She sustained minor injuries and was transported to a hospital. "When you look at the site, it’s incredible," Hevia stated during a news conference. "She was able to pull her car in reverse just slightly enough to be able to get out of the vehicle while the vehicle also caught on fire when the crane landed on the car." Two construction workers were inside the storage container when the crane collapsed on it. Firefighters extricated the trapped workers while simultaneously battling a fire. The two workers, along with the crane operator who reportedly jumped clear as the rig tipped, were taken to a nearby trauma center with minor injuries. All other workers at the site were accounted for, Hevia confirmed. The cause of the crane collapse is currently under investigation. Officials have not yet identified the individuals who were injured.
