Four Dead in Ireland Arson Attack Linked to Drug Debt, Police Investigate Gang Boss

Authorities in Ireland are investigating the potential involvement of a Traveller gang boss in an arson attack that resulted in the deaths of a couple and their two young children. The family was killed when a petrol bomb was thrown into their home in the Birchwood estate near Waterford city center early Tuesday morning.

Philip English, in his 50s, his wife Kim English, in her 30s, and their sons Callum, 12, and Jayden, nine, died in the blaze. The couple's two other children, Nadia, 14, and Elliot, six, remain in critical condition.

According to The Irish Sun, gardaí have identified a Traveller gang leader suspected of ordering the attack. This investigation follows revelations from John James English, Philip's son from a previous marriage, who stated that gangland figures had been terrorizing his family for years over a £17,000 drug debt owed by someone known to them.

This is not the first instance of violence against the family. Just three weeks prior to the fatal incident, their family car was targeted in a petrol bomb attack, though no one was injured. Philip's ex-wife, Anne, also reported that her home had been targeted in a previous petrol bomb attack.

Investigators are reportedly focusing on three brothers involved in a low-level drug operation as part of their hunt for those responsible. Police searches have led to the seizure of vehicles, phones, and other electronic devices. Authorities are also examining whether a woman transported the individual who carried out the attack to the scene.

Security sources expressed concern that the attack could incite further violence, noting that tensions are extremely high within the community. "The people who were killed were completely innocent," a senior source stated. "They were targeted because they knew someone who had owed them money for quite some time."

Community members gathered at the scene on Wednesday for an emotional balloon release to honor the victims. Hundreds also attended a vigil at the Sacred Heart Church. Philip's cousin, Ray Power, urged young people to avoid criminal lifestyles, describing drug use as a "demon" that destroys families.

Gardaí confirmed that the investigation is active and intense, with multiple searches conducted. While electronic devices and vehicles have been seized for technical examination, no arrests have been made at this time. Authorities have appealed to the public for information, stating that people know who carried out the attack.
