Tributes are being paid to a man, his wife, their infant daughter, and another family member who died in a collision in Derby on Saturday night. The crash occurred around 11 p.m. when a red Hyundai left the A38 carriageway near the Toyota Island.
Two women, aged 18 and 30, and a 36-year-old man were pronounced dead at the scene. The seven-month-old baby was taken to a local hospital, where she later died. The driver of the vehicle, a 33-year-old man, sustained serious injuries and was taken to the hospital. He has since been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been bailed.
The victims are understood to have been traveling from Birmingham to Leeds. The Gambia Welfare Society in Leeds identified one of the deceased as Abu Camara, a man described as a "dedicated servant of his community" who mentored young people through football. The society stated that his wife, their baby daughter, and another family member also died in the incident.
The Gambia High Commission in the UK issued a statement extending condolences to the bereaved families and noted that the deputy head of mission has been in contact with the Gambia Welfare Society in Leeds to coordinate with the family's representative. The commission remains in contact with authorities and the families.
Derbyshire Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone with dashcam footage of the incident to come forward. The section of the A38 where the crash occurred was closed for several hours for investigation but has since reopened. Relatives of the victims are being supported by specialist officers.
