Four Boys Rescued from North Yorkshire Cave After Cliff Face Ordeal
Multi-agency rescue operation successfully extracts children trapped by rising tides and difficult conditions.
Four young boys were rescued on Saturday afternoon after becoming trapped in a cave on a cliff face at Thornwick Bay in North Yorkshire. The children were reportedly struggling in difficult conditions in the water and were seen clinging to the cliff.
Filey Coastguard Rescue Team and Flamborough RNLI responded to a 999 call from an onlooker, rushing to the scene to initiate a rescue operation. Upon arrival, one boy had managed to reach the shore, another was in the water, and two remained trapped inside a cave.
The RNLI team swiftly rescued the boy in the ocean, who was then winched to a helicopter and transferred to the Yorkshire Ambulance Service. Simultaneously, a coastguard cliff team was deployed to assist the two boys in the cave.
Dramatic images from the scene show emergency services rappelling down the cliff face. One coastguard descended to within five meters of the trapped boys to assess the situation. A helicopter rescue was considered but deemed too risky due to overhanging cliffs.
As tidal conditions improved, the RNLI team in the water was able to reach the boys in the cave. Both were pulled to safety and transferred to the waiting helicopter, where they were handed over to ambulance crews for health assessments.
The Bridlington Coastguard Rescue Team praised the multi-agency collaboration, stating, "A fantastic example of multi-agency teamwork, with Coastguard teams, RNLI volunteers, the rescue helicopter crew and ambulance colleagues working together in challenging conditions to bring all four people to safety." They added, "This incident could have had a very different outcome." The team thanked all involved for their professionalism and commitment.
Parents of the rescued boys expressed their gratitude on social media. One mother wrote, "Thank you with all my heart. I'm one of the mums. Eternally thankful." Another individual, who identified as the person who called 999, stated, "So incredibly grateful that all the boys came out alive... Very lucky boys due to a wonderful team effort."
