Four Arrested in Nottingham Shooting of Police Officer

Two men and two women have been arrested in connection with the shooting of a police officer in Nottingham, England, authorities confirmed Monday. The officer was injured when he was allegedly blasted with a sawn-off shotgun.

Nottinghamshire Police stated that the incident occurred around 4:50 a.m. on Sunday when the officer approached two suspects at a bus stop on Angel Row in the city center. The suspects fled the scene immediately after the shooting. A sawn-off shotgun was recovered by officers at the scene.

The injured officer was taken to the hospital, where he is currently in stable condition and receiving treatment for a gunshot wound to the foot. Authorities have stated he is receiving support from colleagues and loved ones.

Officers launched a manhunt following the incident. On Sunday, four individuals were arrested and remain in police custody, being questioned by detectives. Among those arrested was a 27-year-old woman, detained on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life. A 24-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

In a separate development early Monday, police stopped a vehicle in Bedfordshire and arrested a 30-year-old man on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Assistant Chief Constable Claire Rukas of Nottinghamshire Police said that a team of detectives is working to establish the full details of the incident. "I am pleased that four arrests have now been made and hope this provides some reassurance to the public as those detained are questioned in connection with the discharge of the firearm," Rukas said in a statement. She thanked local businesses, residents, and the public for their patience while officers conducted their inquiries.

The police cordon on Angel Row has since been lifted, and officers continue to patrol the area. Nottingham East Labour MP Nadia Whittome expressed her thoughts for the injured officer and his family, wishing him a full recovery. The Police Federation of England and Wales also issued a statement, calling the incident a "stark reminder of the dangers police officers face every day while protecting the public."
