A substantial fire engulfed a condominium complex in Foster City, California, on Sunday afternoon, damaging all 51 units and displacing numerous residents. The inferno broke out around 2:30 p.m. on Sea Spray Lane, prompting a large emergency response.

Fire crews remained at the scene Monday, expecting to stay for at least another 24 hours to address lingering hotspots and monitor the heavily damaged structure. The Foster City Building Department has red-tagged the entire 51-unit building, prohibiting residents from returning to their homes.

While no residents were reported injured, two firefighters were transported to a local hospital after becoming trapped during the initial stages of their response. Both have since been released and are recovering. Residents described the difficult experience of evacuating, with some expressing concern over the loss of personal belongings and irreplaceable mementos.

Fire officials characterized the blaze as particularly challenging due to the building's density, intense heat, and rapidly spreading flames. Accessing the fire proved difficult for crews, as the flames moved through spaces above them.

With residents displaced, the Red Cross has established a temporary shelter at the PJCC in Foster City and is providing other necessary services. Affected residents can contact the Red Cross for assistance.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Firefighters are expected to remain on site through at least Tuesday to manage hotspots and assess the full extent of the damage.
