Formula One Returns to Africa with Controversial Rwanda Grand Prix Deal

Formula One is set to return to Africa with a new Grand Prix scheduled to take place in Rwanda, beginning around 2032 under a 10-season agreement. This development fulfills a long-standing call from drivers, including Lewis Hamilton, for the sport to race on the continent again.

The last African Grand Prix was held in Kyalami, South Africa, over 30 years ago during Bernie Ecclestone's tenure.

Stefano Domenicali, Formula One's chief executive, stated that the inclusion of Rwanda signifies a "landmark moment" and will allow the championship to race on every inhabited continent, bringing it closer to global fans. He emphasized a commitment to partnering with Rwanda to create "meaningful impact" and deliver long-term economic and social benefits through tourism, investment, and skills development.

"Africa has always been part of Formula One's future, and from the beginning we were determined to return in the right way, with the right partner, a long-term commitment and a clear vision for creating meaningful impact," Domenicali said. He also noted that Africa is home to over 100 million Formula One fans.

Formula One's decision to partner with Rwanda has drawn criticism due to the nation's human rights record and accusations of "sportswashing." The "Visit Rwanda" brand, which has previously sponsored Arsenal, is now the main shirt sponsor for Aston Villa. Amnesty International UK has called for Aston Villa and the Premier League to acknowledge Rwanda's use of sports partnerships to improve its public image while deflecting from human rights concerns.

International bodies, including the United Nations, have accused Rwanda of supporting the M23 rebel group in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a claim Rwanda denies. The conflict in eastern DRC has resulted in widespread displacement and casualties.
