A former youth pastor died by suicide in a Las Vegas jail on Thursday, three days after he was charged with the 2006 murder of his wife. David Vander Meer, 49, fatally injured himself at the Clark County Detention Center. His death occurred before a scheduled extradition hearing that would have sent him from Nevada to Utah to face charges.

Vander Meer was accused on Monday of murdering his wife, Bernadette, during a trip to Zion National Park in 2006. Bernadette Vander Meer fell to her death from a cliff at the Utah park, an incident initially believed to have been an accident.
