Former White House Press Secretary Remains Loyal to Trump After Brief Tenure
Katie Zacharia, who served five days before being fired, states she is 'ruthlessly loyal' to former President Donald Trump despite his public comments about her performance.
Katie Zacharia, who served as White House press secretary for a mere five days before her dismissal, has stated she remains "ruthlessly loyal" to former President Donald Trump. This declaration comes despite Trump's recent remarks at a Florida rally where he described Zacharia, 41, as a "poor young woman" who "freaked out" upon facing the press corps.
Despite Trump's characterization, Zacharia expressed her continued support for the former president in a statement to Newsweek. "It was an honor to work for President Trump, and no one has been more relentlessly attacked by the media than him," Zacharia said. She added, "The best is yet to come," and reflected on her brief time in the administration, stating she worked "around the clock" leading up to the midterm elections. She quoted Rudyard Kipling's poem "If" to illustrate her perception of Trump's leadership style, noting his ability to "talk with crowds and keep your virtue, or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch."
Zacharia's short tenure made her the shortest-serving press secretary in White House history. Initially, Trump defended her, suggesting the media treated her unfairly and that questions about her background were irrelevant. He recounted telling Zacharia, "Is this for you?" and that he would have reconsidered his own position if he were in her place, telling her, "You don't need this."
Following Zacharia's departure, her predecessor, Karoline Leavitt, offered a critical assessment of her performance. Leavitt told Fox News that the role of White House press secretary is "one of the hardest jobs in politics" and requires significant preparation. Leavitt implied Zacharia was not adequately prepared, recalling her own extensive preparation that included studying and consulting with Cabinet members and the president.
Zacharia's brief time in the role was also marked by scrutiny over her legal credentials. It was revealed that she had failed the California bar exam in 2011 and later worked at a Chinese law firm without passing the exam. Despite this, she frequently appeared on news channels as a legal analyst, identifying herself as a lawyer.
Her debut briefing, which lasted only 14 minutes and took just three questions, drew criticism. An appearance on Sean Hannity's Fox News show shortly before her dismissal further intensified scrutiny. During the interview, Hannity pressed Zacharia on her description of herself as a lawyer and questioned her explanation for the brief briefing, warning her that the White House briefing room is not a welcoming environment. Zacharia attributed her struggles to a rushed hiring process and insufficient preparation time.
