Russia released a former U.S. Marine, Robert Gilman, who had been detained since 2022 and was reportedly in extremely poor health. Gilman, a Massachusetts native, was freed "from detention for humanitarian reasons" and was flying on a U.S. plane to Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, according to Kirill Dmitriev, a special envoy for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey stated on social media that Gilman had been "essentially catatonic" and was suffering from a "severe case of pneumonia" prior to his release. Gilman, 28 at the time of his arrest, was detained for kicking a police officer while under the influence of alcohol aboard a train bound for Moscow.
