Former UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves Expresses Support for EU Membership

Rachel Reeves, former Chancellor, has publicly stated that she believes the United Kingdom's future should lie within the European Union, arguing that Brexit has diminished the country's economic strength, security, and global standing. This marks a significant shift from Labour's previous stance, which committed to operating outside the EU and making Brexit work.

In a recent intervention, Reeves indicated her support for an open discussion regarding the UK's future relationship with Europe. While Labour's 2024 election manifesto explicitly ruled out rejoining the free movement of people, the single market, or a customs union, Prime Minister Andy Burnham has suggested the need for an honest conversation about potential future arrangements. Any substantial changes, Burnham noted, would require a mandate from a general election, the next of which is scheduled by 2029.

Reeves detailed her personal convictions in an opinion piece, writing, "No-one in the Treasury ever doubted where my instincts were. I do believe Britain's future lies in the European Union." She emphasized that proponents of rejoining the EU must present a compelling case, demonstrate clear benefits, and outline the correct steps forward.

Looking ahead, Reeves expressed hope for progress on bilateral agreements with the EU. Specifically, she is anticipating confirmation of a youth mobility scheme, an initiative she championed during her tenure in office. Additionally, she is seeking advancements toward the UK's participation in the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) scheme. Launched last March, SAFE is part of a broader EU initiative to bolster defense capabilities in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. A defense pact established in May of the previous year created a pathway for UK-based defense companies to engage in projects funded by SAFE.

During her time in government, Reeves also commented on the need for governmental courage in undertaking large-scale infrastructure projects and for a clear-eyed assessment of the implications, both positive and negative, of artificial intelligence on advanced economies.
