Former Tory Councillor Accused of Drugging Wife for Sexual Assaults

A former Conservative councillor allegedly advertised his wife on various websites, including Craigslist and Grindr, before drugging her to be sexually assaulted by multiple men. Philip Young, a former cabinet member of Swindon borough council, pleaded guilty earlier this year to nearly 50 sex offenses against Joanne Young, who has waived her right to anonymity.

The trial heard that Ms. Young was repeatedly drugged by her ex-husband over a 13-year period, enabling him to carry out a series of assaults. Four other men – Norman Macksoni, 48, Connor Sanderson-Doyle, 32, Richard Wilkins, 62, and Mohammed Hassan, 38 – are currently on trial at Winchester Crown Court, accused of assaulting Ms. Young on separate occasions between 2016 and 2023.

Prosecutors stated that it is not their case that the four defendants administered the drugs. However, they suggested that some defendants might claim they believed they had Ms. Young's consent through her husband. The prosecution is asking the jury to consider whether it is ever reasonable to engage in sexual activity with someone without their explicit consent, and whether it is reasonable to believe one person can consent on behalf of another.

Jurors were informed that the case would involve "depressingly awful and sordid material." Evidence presented indicated that Mr. Young had preferences for blindfolding and restraining his wife. When asked if she would be open to sleeping with someone else, Ms. Young clearly responded "No," though Mr. Young made a joke about it, stating, "as long as I could watch you." The prosecution contends there was never a conversation that would indicate acceptance.

Mr. Young allegedly developed a fantasy of his wife sleeping with others and sought ways to achieve this without her knowledge. In 2015, police intercepted a package of sedatives being mailed to Young from India, which he denied knowledge of. Expert analysis later showed Ms. Young had been exposed to sedative drugs, including ketamine and zolpidem, known for their sedative and amnesiac properties, over periods in 2023 and 2024.

Young reportedly used pictures of his wife, taken without her knowledge, to advertise her on sites like Craigslist and Grindr. Ms. Jones KC stated that Young sought strangers, regardless of age or race, but preferably close to Swindon, to sleep with his wife when circumstances were favorable. He allegedly presented this as a shared kink, but evidence suggested the photos depicted her inanimate and restrained, with no indication of her consent. The prosecution alleges that a nightcap was used to incapacitate Ms. Young, rendering her unaware or unable to remember any events.

Mr. Young admitted to 14 counts of voyeurism, 11 of rape, 11 of administering a substance with intent, seven of assault by penetration, four of sexual assault, and one of publishing an obscene article. He also pleaded guilty to charges related to indecent images of children and possessing extreme pornographic images.

The four defendants on trial have pleaded not guilty to the charges against them. Norman Macksoni denies one count of rape. Richard Wilkins denies one count of rape and one of assault by penetration. Connor Sanderson-Doyle denies sexual assault by penetration and sexual touching. Mohammed Hassan denies one count of sexual touching.

A sixth defendant, Dean Hamilton, has admitted to charges including assault by penetration, sexual assault, and rape. Young and Hamilton are scheduled to be sentenced following the conclusion of the trial, which is expected to last up to four weeks. Young previously served as a Conservative councillor from 2007 to 2010 and has since been involved in several companies.
