Former 'The View' Co-Host Debbie Matenopoulos Seeks US Ambassador Role in Greece
Matenopoulos has publicly declared her interest in replacing Kimberly Guilfoyle as the US ambassador to Greece, citing her Greek heritage and media experience.
Debbie Matenopoulos, a former co-host of "The View," has expressed her desire to be appointed as the next U.S. ambassador to Greece, following the resignation of Kimberly Guilfoyle. Matenopoulos, 51, announced her intentions via an Instagram video, detailing what she believes are qualifications for the diplomatic post.
Matenopoulos, who was one of the original co-hosts of "The View" when the show debuted in 1997, stated that she speaks Greek, which was her first language. She also highlighted her deep personal connections to the country, noting that her entire family resides in Greece, she holds both Greek and American passports, owns property there, and travels to the country every summer. "I understand the politics. I understand the government, I understand the people. I have many connections and I love the country," Matenopoulos said in her video.
Beyond her personal ties, Matenopoulos pointed to her career as a journalist and television personality, spanning three decades. She has hosted shows such as "Good Day Live," E!'s "The Daily 10," and "The Insider." She also mentioned her success as an author of two Greek cookbooks and the creator of a Greek skincare line. Matenopoulos further noted her journalism degree from New York University and that she was selected for "The View" by Barbara Walters.
"You don't need any qualifications really to be a US ambassador to any country. You don't need a college degree or diplomatic background, you don't need a life in politics," Matenopoulos commented, adding, "You just need to be an entrepreneur, a successful business woman or business man, a political donor and you have to be appointed or nominated by the president and approved by the US senate."
Her public appeal comes after Kimberly Guilfoyle's resignation, which followed reports of an investigation into her spending habits and alleged extravagant demands during her tenure. Leaked text messages reportedly showed Guilfoyle seeking a significant payment for a credit card bill before assuming her diplomatic role. Guilfoyle has denied the accusations, stating she will "vigorously defend" her name and reputation.
