Former Teacher Charged with Rape, Students Express Shock Amid TikTok Videos
Students of Deandra Kontou, a former Newington College teacher, have voiced their shock and dismay following her arrest and charges of raping a boy.
Former Newington College teacher Deandra Kontou has been charged with the rape of a boy, a development that has left her former students expressing disbelief and distress. Kontou, who was once filmed by students in her classroom creating TikTok videos, was confronted by the Daily Mail while reporting for bail on Wednesday morning.
Students who attended Kontou's classes described themselves as "stunned" and "shocked" by the allegations against the educator. The emergence of classroom TikTok videos has added another layer of complexity to the situation, contrasting with the serious charges now facing Kontou.
According to court documents, Kontou is accused of raping a student during a trip to Fitzroy Island. The alleged assault occurred when the student was under the age of 16. The images depict Kontou at a pre-wedding celebration in April 2017 and on a 2018 Newington College trip to Fitzroy Island, where the alleged incident took place.
Kontou's career after leaving Newington College in late 2019 saw her begin work at Georges River College Senior Campus. She has since been suspended without pay from her current role at the public school.
