Former 'Swan' Contestants Detail Show's 'Sadistic' Nature in New Documentary

Twenty years after the extreme makeover show “The Swan” last aired, former contestants are speaking out about the traumatic experiences they endured. The new Hulu documentary, “The Swan: Behind the Mirror,” features accounts from participants who describe the program as one of the most "sadistic" reality shows of all time.
Kari Bravata, a contestant from the show’s original run, told Page Six that she “almost died for reality TV.” The Fox series, which aired in 2004, aimed to transform women who felt like “ugly ducklings” into “swans” through surgical procedures, all documented for television.
Director Erin Lee Carr, speaking about the documentary, stated her belief that “The Swan” was exceptionally harsh, calling it “one of the most sadistic reality shows of all time.” The series, which was short-lived due to its controversial nature, promised significant physical transformations but, according to Bravata and others featured in the documentary, came with significant risks and psychological tolls.
