Jeffrey Dean Rose, 46, appeared at Barkingside Magistrates' Court on Tuesday facing charges of manslaughter, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and aggravated burglary with intent.

The charges stem from an incident where Rose Smith, 75, and her husband Ronald Smith, 81, were reportedly attacked with a metal bar during a home invasion. The couple was watching television at their home in Finsbury Park, north London, when four individuals allegedly broke in and demanded cash.

Officers responding to a neighbor's call found Rose Smith collapsed in the hallway. She was taken to the hospital, where she died the following day. Ronald Smith sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated and discharged from the hospital.

Prosecutors stated that Rose, a father of two, previously worked as a private investigator from 2012 to 2016. His defense attorney mentioned that he served as a soldier but was discharged due to the coronavirus pandemic and subsequently worked as a bin man.

Rose was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at the Old Bailey on September 22.

The family of Rose Smith issued a statement describing her as a "wonderful, outgoing woman" who loved bingo, cafes, and spending time with her family, including her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild. They remembered her as "the life and soul of every party" with a "big heart" who brought "laughter and happiness wherever she went."
