Mitchell Coombs, a former producer for The Kyle & Jackie O Show, has publicly shared his journey through alcohol addiction and a subsequent four-week stint in rehabilitation. Coombs, who worked at KIIS 1065 from April 2018 to May 2021, revealed that his "love of wine got a little bit out of hand" and became "crippling."

He described the problem as primarily occurring "behind closed doors," leading to frequent hangovers that he would mask to maintain appearances. The secrecy and lies associated with his drinking became a significant concern, prompting him to seek help. One of the "big alarm bells" was experiencing memory loss, where he would nod along to conversations about the previous night despite having no recollection.

Coombs noted that his alcohol consumption, intended to "feel good," ultimately had the opposite effect, impacting his productivity, nervous system, energy levels, and mental health. Recognizing he was "in so deep" and unable to manage the issue alone, he sought professional assistance. His partner, Sean, initiated contact with the National Alcohol and Other Drug Hotline, which helped in developing a recovery plan.

Coombs admitted to being "sh** scared" about entering rehab but found the experience to be "super positive." He met "top-notch people" and acquired coping mechanisms, describing himself as now being "very well equipped for the road ahead, with plenty of 'tools in the toolbox.'"

Since completing rehab, Coombs has found it surprisingly easy to socialize, even in environments where alcohol is present, a feat he previously considered impossible. He reports feeling "super refreshed" and having gained a "sense of clarity."

Coombs plans to resume hosting his podcast, Escape Goat, and has been encouraged by the public response to his story. He stated that many people have shared their own recovery experiences and that his narrative has prompted others to recognize their own struggles. He advises anyone in a similar situation not to panic and emphasizes that immediate rehab may not always be necessary.

For individuals seeking support for addiction, the National Alcohol & Other Drug Hotline can be reached at 1800 250 015. The service is free, confidential, and offers counseling, advice, and information.
