Charlotte Winstanley, 28, was released in August from HMP Drake Hall in Staffordshire, having served half a year of her sentence for misconduct in public office. She was jailed in February for her relationship with Jabhari Blair, 30, an inmate serving a 12-and-a-half-year sentence for stabbing a man. The affair took place while Winstanley was working as an officer at HMP Lindholme. Prosecutors stated their covert relationship continued for approximately three years, involving explicit communication and the exchange of prohibited items, including SIM cards and contraband. Blair reportedly directed Winstanley to purchase items for him and even sent her links to websites for choosing desired goods. Winstanley also shared confidential information with Blair and his mother, including details about other inmates' medical records and plans for his transfer. A judge described the case as "by far the worst" he had encountered of its kind, noting Winstanley's sexual relationship with Blair, her provision of contraband, and her sharing of prison photos. Even after being suspended in November 2022, Winstanley continued to visit Blair and expressed hopes of being pregnant with his child during a recorded video call. Her defense stated she was remorseful and that this was her first relationship since age 15. It remains unclear how Winstanley qualified for early release on license. The news follows discussions around new early release schemes in England and Wales, intended to alleviate prison overcrowding, which could see some prisoners released after serving half their term instead of two-thirds. The proposed changes have generated controversy, particularly concerning offenders convicted of manslaughter.
