Former Police Officer Jailed for 12 Years for Raping Two Women

A former police officer has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after being found guilty of raping and physically assaulting two women. Campbell Petrie was convicted of eight charges related to abuse spanning from 2006 to 2023.

Petrie's initial arrest occurred in 2009 when one of his victims accused him of threatening behavior. He was detained for five hours, but no charges were filed at the time due to insufficient evidence.

The case resurfaced in 2023 when a second woman came forward with allegations of rape. This prompted a thorough investigation by specialist sexual crime officers. Petrie was arrested, charged, and suspended in December 2023, eventually retiring from the force a year later.

In September of this year, a jury found Petrie guilty of multiple offenses, including four counts of rape, as well as other sexual and physical assaults against the two women.

Assistant Chief Constable Tim Mairs stated that Petrie's actions represented "a series of severely abusive, exploitative and violent crimes towards women." Mairs contrasted Petrie's conduct with the "professionalism and commitment" of the officers who investigated him. He also commended the courage of the victims for reporting the crimes, expressing hope that the sentence would provide them with "closure and comfort." Mairs emphasized that the investigation demonstrates the police force's commitment to listening to and supporting victims, taking immediate action to investigate and prosecute perpetrators, regardless of their position.

Petrie's conviction has raised questions regarding the background check procedures for police officers in Scotland.
