Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, known as Nitro on the BBC show "Gladiators," has shared that fatherhood profoundly influenced his decision to step away from his athletic career and embrace television. The former sprinter, who represented the UK in the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics, stated that his daughter's birth prompted a reevaluation of his priorities, leading him to seek a career that would allow him more time at home with his family.
In 2023, Aikines-Aryeetey transitioned from athletics to television, a move he says provides greater flexibility to spend time with his wife, Lauren, and their five-year-old daughter, Aubreé-Isla. He described his daughter as his "whole entire world" and acknowledged that his previous career as a sprinter was largely "selfish," involving numerous compromises and sacrifices.
"I was sad when she was born because I was like, she won't know me as a sprinter and having won x amount of medals," Aikines-Aryeetey told the Daily Mail. "But that was so selfish of me. Actually I've been given an even greater gift with her seeing me do Gladiators and Strictly and MasterChef because all of these things have taught her different things about life."
His daughter has shown a keen interest in his television ventures, frequently joining him in the kitchen after he appeared on "MasterChef" and taking up dance classes inspired by his time on "Strictly Come Dancing." Aikines-Aryeetey has enrolled her in performing arts school, noting that she is embracing these activities.
Aikines-Aryeetey, who adopted the name Nitro because he is "a form of energy," revealed that even during his athletic training, people suggested he was destined for a career in entertainment. He explained that he enjoys connecting with people and creating a positive environment.
Reflecting on his past, he stated that from the age of 14, he was focused on becoming an Olympian, a goal he achieved. However, he now recognizes that his pursuit of athletic success was also laying the groundwork for his public persona as Nitro.
He also expressed enthusiasm for a potential "Strictly All Stars" series, indicating he would "jump at the opportunity" if invited, though he humorously deferred to more skilled competitors. Regarding the recent host shake-up on "Strictly," Aikines-Aryeetey expressed confidence in the show's brand, believing they are adapting effectively.
Currently, Aikines-Aryeetey is focused on filming the new season of "Gladiators." He also revealed his dream celebrity opponents for the show would be "I'm A Celeb" champion AngryGinge and boxer Anthony Joshua.
In addition to his television work, Aikines-Aryeetey has partnered with HomeServe for a campaign promoting drain maintenance. He has been appointed the nation's first 'Personal Drainer,' aiming to educate the public on preventing costly drain blockages. "You've heard of a personal trainer, but now you have a personal drainer here to help you monitor and look after your drains!" he said. He emphasized the importance of prevention and educating people on what should and should not be flushed down drains to avoid household embarrassment and expensive repairs.
