Former Officers Jailed for Misusing Police Powers

Two former police officers received jail sentences for abusing their authority by accessing and sharing intimate material from a suspect's phone. Paul Street was sentenced to four years in prison, and Joshua Williams received a four-year sentence.

The case involved a female suspect whose phone was examined by Williams in the autumn of 2020. Williams remarked to Street that the suspect was "quite fit." Street then inquired if there were "any nudes," to which Williams responded by confirming the presence of a video depicting the woman in a sexual act. Williams subsequently sent the private video from the suspect's phone to Street.

In 2021, Street asked Williams via WhatsApp if he still possessed the intimate video, stating he wanted to show it to "the lads from footy." The woman, in her victim personal statement, expressed the profound violation she experienced, stating, "The photographs and videos on my phone were deeply private and intimate. Learning that people in positions of authority deliberately accessed and circulated these images has left me feeling exposed, degraded and powerless."

Representing Street, Jennifer Dempster KC stated that her client "enormously regrets his behaviour" and recognized he had failed the public, the police, and his family. Robert Morris, representing Williams, acknowledged that his actions were "deeply inappropriate, driven by misguided and stupid desire to engage in salacious gossip."

Senior specialist prosecutor Lisa Rose of the Crown Prosecution Service emphasized the gravity of the officers' actions. "Police officers are entrusted with significant powers and are expected to uphold the highest standards at all times," Rose said. "The actions of Paul Street and Joshua Williams represented a serious breach of that trust."
