Former Northern Ireland Party Leader Sentenced to 15 Years for Sex Abuse

Jeffrey Donaldson, the former leader of Northern Ireland’s largest unionist party, was sentenced on Thursday to 15 years in prison for the rape and sex abuse of two girls decades ago. Donaldson, 63, had been one of Northern Ireland's most prominent politicians until his arrest two years ago. In June, he was convicted of one count of rape, four counts of gross indecency, and 13 indecent assault charges involving two girls between 1985 and 2008. He had denied the charges.

Donaldson led the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) from 2021 until 2024. The DUP is the largest party advocating for Northern Ireland to remain part of the United Kingdom. He resigned as leader of the conservative DUP following his arrest and relinquished the seat in the U.K. House of Commons he had held since 1997.

Judge Paul Ramsey described the former politician's actions as a “catastrophic descent into disgrace.” Donaldson was sentenced at Newry Crown Court, south of Belfast. He received 11 years for offenses against one victim and four years for the other, with the sentences to be served consecutively. The judge noted that Donaldson had not offered any expression of regret or apology to his victims.

During the trial, Donaldson maintained his innocence, stating he was certain he did not rape one of the complainants when she was a child. His wife, Eleanor Donaldson, 60, was found to have aided and abetted his offenses by witnessing the abuse without intervening. Due to mental health issues, she underwent a fact-finding hearing that did not result in a conviction.

The two victims testified that Donaldson had groped them when they were approximately primary school age. The older victim, identified in court as Complainant B, stated that Donaldson raped her. Complainant B recalled Donaldson apologizing to her in the 1990s for past events, though Donaldson testified he had only apologized for making her feel uncomfortable. In 2020, Donaldson sent a letter to Complainant A expressing regret for “hurt, pain and distress” he caused, but he claimed the letter did not refer to sexual abuse allegations.

Donaldson's lawyer argued during a pre-sentencing hearing that the convictions overshadowed his client's significant life achievements.
