Former NFL Punter Kasey Redfern Dies at 35 After Cancer Battle

Former NFL punter Kasey Redfern died Tuesday at the age of 35 after a 3.5-year battle with central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma, his wife announced Friday. Lauryl Redfern told the California Post that her husband "received many miracles from the Lord along the way" during his fight with the aggressive form of cancer.

"He shouldn’t have lived as long as he did, but he fought an incredible fight," Lauryl Redfern stated. "He smiled the whole way through, never questioned why and always knew God had a purpose for this, having great hope that his miracle would be healing on Earth."

Kasey Redfern was diagnosed with CNS lymphoma in the spring of 2023 after a tumor was discovered on his brain. He underwent numerous treatments. In a Facebook post last month, Lauryl Redfern announced that her husband had moved to hospice care due to a recent health deterioration.

"It seems that everything he’s been experiencing over the last couple weeks — the falls, extreme decline in short term memory, random throwing up, and some other things are likely due to cognitive decline caused by neurotoxicity from all of the treatments he’s had over the last 3.5 years," she wrote. "His poor brain has had all it can take treatment wise so we want to make sure that he can be as comfortable as possible."

Kasey Redfern played college football for Wofford from 2010 to 2013, where he handled both punting and placekicking duties. He entered the NFL in 2014, signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted free agent. Over his NFL career, from 2014 to 2019, he was under contract with several teams, including the Chargers, Panthers, Browns, Lions, Cowboys, and Falcons. He appeared in four regular-season games, averaging 42.1 yards per punt.

He is survived by his wife and their two children, aged 6 and 4.
