Former NFL Punter Kasey Redfern Dies at 35
Redfern, who played for the Detroit Lions and Atlanta Falcons, passed away after a battle with brain cancer.
Kasey Redfern, a former NFL punter who played for the Detroit Lions and Atlanta Falcons, has died at the age of 35. The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office in South Carolina was recently notified of his passing, according to the California Post.
Redfern was diagnosed with central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma in May 2023 after doctors discovered a tumor on his brain, according to a GoFundMe campaign established for his medical expenses. His wife, Lauryl, shared in a Facebook post last month that Redfern had transitioned to hospice care due to a significant decline in his health over the summer.
She described the decline as likely stemming from neurotoxicity caused by his treatments over the past 3.5 years, noting a worsening of symptoms such as falls, memory loss, and vomiting. Lauryl Redfern expressed a desire for her husband to be comfortable.
Redfern played college football for Wofford College from 2010 to 2013. He signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted free agent in 2014 and subsequently had contracts with several other teams, including the Chargers, Panthers, Browns, Lions, Cowboys, and Falcons. He appeared in four regular season NFL games, averaging 42.1 yards per punt.
Rob Greene, co-defensive coordinator at Texas Tech and Redfern's former teammate and roommate at Wofford, praised Redfern on social media in May, calling him a "Great man, husband, father, and friend" and urging donations to support his cancer fight.
