Former Conservative minister and Reform UK spokeswoman Ann Widdecombe, 78, has died, with police now investigating her death as murder. A 26-year-old white British man has been arrested in connection with the incident.
Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman stated that the case is not being treated as a terrorist incident and there is currently no information to suggest a political motivation behind the death. Widdecombe was found with serious injuries at her home in Devon on Thursday morning.
News of her death has prompted widespread reactions from political leaders. Kemi Badenoch, leader of the Conservative Party, for which Widdecombe served as shadow home secretary, said the party was "reeling." She remembered Widdecombe as "a very fun and feisty woman who spoke her mind," adding, "My heart is breaking for her family."
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described Widdecombe as a "distinguished politician" and her death as a "significant loss." He called for unity across political divides, expressing his thoughts with her family. Starmer indicated he had spoken with Speaker of the House of Commons Lindsay Hoyle, Badenoch, Nigel Farage, and Andy Burnham to encourage a collective response.
Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey called the circumstances of her death "truly horrifying," noting her "deep faith" and "devotion to public service." He offered his "thoughts and prayers" to her family and loved ones.
Andy Burnham, a prominent Labour figure, emphasized the importance of police resources being dedicated to a swift investigation, stating that Widdecombe "gave a lifetime of public service."
Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, had previously said Widdecombe would be "missed by us all" and was beloved by voters.
Anton du Beke, who partnered with Widdecombe on the television show "Strictly Come Dancing" in 2010, shared his devastation, calling it "the saddest of news." He recalled her as a "real friend" who was "fun, upbeat, positive, supportive, and game."
A statement from Widdecombe's agent initially announced her death without specifying the circumstances. A subsequent statement from her management expressed devastation and support for the police investigation, while reiterating the family's request for privacy during this difficult time.
