Former Microsoft 'Boy Genius' Arrested for Antisemitic Vandalism in California

Kristoffer Von Hassel, 18, known for discovering a security flaw in Microsoft's Xbox system at age five, has been arrested in Imperial Beach, California, on suspicion of antisemitic vandalism. The San Diego Sheriff's Office took Von Hassel into custody early Tuesday after responding to multiple reports of graffiti targeting local homes.

Deputies were first alerted to swastikas and other hate symbols appearing on residences on September 13. A second incident occurred on September 19, involving one of the previously vandalized homes and a nearby alleyway. Enhanced patrols and surveillance footage led authorities to identify Von Hassel as the suspect.

Police apprehended Von Hassel in a dark alley where one of the acts of vandalism had taken place. He was found to be in possession of an electronic device capable of interacting with wireless signals, including systems that control garage doors and gates, according to authorities.

One of the targeted residents, Sandy Brillhart, expressed fear and distress over the incidents. She initially dismissed the markings as simple vandalism until she recognized the symbols as hate speech, including a swastika and the letters 'NS' and 'WP,' which stand for National Socialists and white power.

The first incident occurred around Rosh Hashanah, a Jewish holiday. The second attack, a week later and before Yom Kippur, involved further vandalism to the Brillharts' property, including their garage door. "Well, this is unfortunate that it's happened not only in our community, but worldwide now, and we need to deal with it before it gets out of control," Bill Brillhart told KGTV.

Von Hassel's father expressed disbelief, recalling his son's earlier achievement. In 2014, Von Hassel gained international attention when he demonstrated how to access his father's Xbox account without a password, a flaw he reported to Microsoft. This discovery earned him recognition, free games, and a year of Xbox Live, with some media outlets dubbing him the 'world's youngest hacker.'

His mother stated that the family intends to contest the charges and expressed concern about the potential impact on his future. As of Wednesday afternoon, Von Hassel remained in custody at the San Diego Central Jail. He is being held on $122,500 bail on charges including vandalism and property damage.
