More than a decade after a significant shake-up at FOX11 dismantled one of Los Angeles' most popular morning television teams, former "Good Day L.A." anchors Jillian Barberie, Steve Edwards, and Dorothy Lucey have reunited for a new podcast.
The podcast, titled "So Unanchored," brings back the trio that spent nearly 20 years atop the fiercely competitive Los Angeles morning television landscape, at times surpassing national network shows and rival "The KTLA Morning News." The show typically drops on Fridays, with the hosts expressing a renewed chemistry.
"We have not missed a beat," Steve Edwards told The Los Angeles Times. "It's the most effortless thing. It makes us very happy when we get together. There's an endorphin thing going on."
Dorothy Lucey added, "And we like each other more."
During their tenure on "Good Day L.A.," Edwards served as the veteran newsman, Lucey as the upbeat co-host, and Barberie as the outspoken weather personality. Off-camera, however, Barberie and Lucey's relationship was strained. Barberie once described Lucey as "very Christian and Bible-thumpy" on air, while Lucey reportedly called Barberie "mean."
The team's dynamic unraveled in 2012 when Lucey was fired as part of a station revamp. Barberie departed months later after declining a demotion. Edwards remained with the station until his exit in 2017, following allegations of sexual harassment.
These departures prompted protests from viewers and public figures, including Suzanne Somers, Piers Morgan, and Simon Cowell.
Barberie has spoken about the challenging period following her exit from FOX11. "I lost my job, got divorced and got cancer all at the same time," she told The Times. "The fact that these two were a constant in my life during those 12 years when I was going through all those things is everything. I'm so grateful."
Barberie noted that the shared hardships helped to mend the past on-air animosity between herself and Lucey. "Dorothy and I love each other now," Barberie said on the podcast. Lucey confirmed this, stating, "We do. Because the last time you saw us, we really didn't like each other."
Despite the personal reconciliations, Barberie expressed no forgiveness towards FOX11, stating, "I don't want anything associated with that show. Let's start fresh, man. They used us and they treated us like s-- at the end. Who needs them? Goodbye!"
