Former Kentucky Cheerleader Sentenced for Killing Newborn Son

A former University of Kentucky cheerleader has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after admitting to killing her newborn son. Laken Snelling, 22, pleaded guilty in August in Fayette Circuit Court to first-degree manslaughter, abuse of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence, and concealing the birth of an infant.

During her sentencing hearing, Snelling stated, “Instead of helping him, I ended his life,” according to WLEX. Prosecutors had recommended a 10-year sentence for the manslaughter charge, along with one-year sentences for each of the other charges.

The infant's body was discovered stuffed in a trash bag. Snelling was a cheerleader for the University of Kentucky.
