Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has reportedly been placed under house arrest by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), according to a new report. The IRGC's intelligence wing is said to be holding the 69-year-old former president following an alleged Israeli plot to install him in place of the current Iranian regime.

The New York Times, citing four Iranian officials, reported that Ahmadinejad was being held by the IRGC after leaving a safe house operated by Israel's Mossad. Before resurfacing last week, Ahmadinejad had not been seen publicly since an Israeli airstrike hit his compound on February 28, during what was described as Operation Epic Fury. He was reportedly then taken to the Mossad safe house, according to U.S. and Iranian officials cited by the Times.

Ahmadinejad, who served as Iran's president from 2005 to 2013, reappeared last week accompanied by security guards during funeral ceremonies for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Khamenei was killed on the same day as the strike on Ahmadinejad's compound.
