Former Intern Faces Plea Deal in NYC Rape Case

Chamberlain Nwi-ue, 24, a former investment banking intern and student at Indiana University's Kelley School of Business, appeared in Manhattan criminal court Monday as prosecutors revealed a potential plea deal in his attempted rape case. Nwi-ue is accused of following a woman into her New York City apartment building and forcing his way into her residence with the intent to sexually assault her in 2024.

During the court appearance, prosecutors indicated they are considering offering Nwi-ue a sentence of 10 years in prison followed by eight years of supervised release if he pleads guilty. The defense requested additional time to review DNA evidence, and the next hearing is scheduled for November 23.

Nwi-ue, who initially pleaded not guilty to charges including first-degree rape, first-degree sexual assault, first-degree burglary with intent of causing injury, and second-degree burglary motivated by sex, has seen a significant change in his appearance since his arrest. He was taken into custody on June 29, 2024.

According to police, the woman Nwi-ue allegedly targeted was saved by her doorman, who heard her screams and called 911. Authorities stated that upon arrival, officers found Nwi-ue holding onto the victim.

Prosecutors also revealed that Nwi-ue's alleged crimes occurred less than 24 hours after he was released without bond for a separate alleged sexual assault. In that incident, police reported he inappropriately touched a woman and attempted to forcibly kiss her. Despite prosecutors requesting a $5,000 bond, Nwi-ue was granted supervised release because he was not a permanent New York City resident. Following the attempted rape arrest, he was given a $100,000 bond and has remained in jail.

Court documents indicate Nwi-ue allegedly told police that the victim's eye contact was an "invitation" to enter her apartment. He also reportedly made aggressive statements to the victim and comments about other women after his arrest.

Citibank confirmed that Nwi-ue was terminated from his internship within two weeks of starting due to behavioral issues. The spokesperson stated that both alleged crimes occurred after his termination from the firm.

Prosecutors said they were considering offering Nwi-ue 10 years in prison followed by eight years of supervised release if he alters his plea to guilty. He is pictured in court on Monday
