A former human relations executive at global law firm CMS is suing for discrimination after his termination for social media posts that included anti-Islam sentiments and remarks about transgender individuals. Dan Cooper, who previously sought to be a candidate for the Reform UK party, is seeking £400,000 in compensation.

Cooper's posts on X included statements such as, "I hate Islam. It's a 7th century barbaric cult. I don’t fear it, I loath it." He also responded to Coventry South MP Zarah Sultana with, "You are a race baiting, uneducated stain on this country." Additionally, Cooper questioned military funding for Ukraine, referring to President Volodymyr Zelensky as a "coke addict." Regarding transgender issues, he posted, "If you are over 18 and think you are transgender then you have a mental illness. If you are 8 and think you are transgender your parents have a mental illness."

Cooper was dismissed from his role as senior HR business partner at CMS in March 2025. He claims he was unfairly discriminated against for his political opinions and beliefs, which he describes as "gender critical and Islam critical." He intends to pursue a legal claim for unfair dismissal and discrimination on the grounds of belief, protected under the Equality Act 2010.

He stated that while CMS viewed his posts as "highly offensive and discriminatory," he believes he was sacked for expressing his beliefs. Cooper is now raising funds online for his legal case, asserting his right to free expression of thought and speech in the workplace.

Cooper's attempt to stand as a Reform UK candidate in local elections was met with a suspension of his party membership. A Reform UK spokesperson stated that nominations had not yet opened, but that Cooper would never be a candidate due to the party expecting high standards. CMS confirmed they took "prompt and decisive action" upon learning of the remarks, emphasizing that the views expressed were personal and did not represent the firm. The company also stated its commitment to an inclusive environment for all colleagues.
