Christine Hobson, a 72-year-old former headteacher, has completed 126 marathons since retiring in 2014, including becoming the oldest woman to finish the Antarctic Ice Marathon. Hobson's running journey began in her 50s when she was overweight and struggled with physical activity. A walk up a small hill near her home prompted her to make a significant lifestyle change.
A Transformative Start
Hobson's daughter encouraged her to join a local running club, Holmfirth Harriers. Within days, she signed up for the London Marathon. She adopted the Jeff Galloway walk/run method, which incorporates strategic walk breaks to help manage distance and prevent overexertion. She continues to use this approach, emphasizing that consistent movement is key, not necessarily continuous running.
Global Achievements and Extreme Conditions
Her marathon achievements include running on every continent. In 2017, she completed the Tel Aviv Marathon, and two years later, she ran the Singapore Marathon. In 2022, at age 69, Hobson became the oldest woman to participate in the Antarctic Ice Marathon at Union Glacier. This endeavor required rapid preparation, with only three weeks to train and arrange travel after receiving a last-minute offer for a dropout place. The trip faced numerous delays, including COVID-19 restrictions and a bank flagging her significant payment as a potential scam.
The Antarctic race presented unique challenges. Hobson recalled the profound silence near the South Pole, describing it as disturbing due to the lack of wildlife. The most difficult aspect was a whiteout condition, where visibility was reduced to mere centimeters, leading to a brief moment of panic about falling into an ice crevice. The race stations provided hot chocolate and tea for warmth, and medical staff monitored runners for frostbite. Hobson finished the Antarctic marathon in eight hours and 33 minutes.
Lifestyle and Future Goals
Since changing her lifestyle, Hobson has lost over 3 stone (approximately 42 pounds) and her biological age is reportedly decades younger than her chronological age. She has abstained from alcohol since 2017 and adopted a protein-rich diet. While she avoids trendy glucose gels, opting for fruit or jam sandwiches for energy during runs, she notes they can be difficult to chew by the later stages of a marathon.
Hobson, who now consistently finishes marathons in under five hours, aims to run the North Pole Marathon in the coming years. She encourages older individuals to challenge age-related limitations, stating, "You can’t blame your age for your problems. You’ve got to push through."
