A former chairman of Ebbw Vale Football Club has been found to have stolen approximately £22,000 from the club's accounts to fund a cocaine habit. The club is now struggling with severe financial pressure as a result of the fraud.

Karl Morecroft, the former chairman, faked HMRC documents and transferred money directly into his personal account. The club's finances were so depleted that it was forced to secure short-term borrowing to fund end-of-season trophies. Essential maintenance was neglected, leading to the deterioration of the club's pitches. Furthermore, the club was unable to pay for winter training facilities on time, and coaches had to utilize worn-out resources. The club also missed a deadline to enter a 30-year lease of its building, which is expected to have a serious long-term impact.

Victim impact statements from club members reveal the extent of the damage. One individual, who had trusted Morecroft, expressed deep guilt and shame for not recognizing the warning signs, stating they felt responsible for allowing the situation to escalate. "Thousands of pounds have been lost leaving the club struggling to recover and its future uncertain," the statement read. "I have lost confidence in my own judgement and feel responsible for allowing the situation to escalate."

The club has relied on fundraisers, parents, and volunteers to raise money to continue operations in the wake of the embezzlement. The secretary of the club highlighted the severe financial strain, noting that the inability to secure the lease and the overall financial distress put the club's future in jeopardy.
