Former DUP Leader Jeffrey Donaldson Jailed 15 Years for Child Sex Offenses
Donaldson convicted of 18 offenses against two minors, including rape.
Former leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) Jeffrey Donaldson has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for child sex offenses after being convicted of assaulting two women when they were minors.
Donaldson, 63, was unanimously found guilty in July of 18 offenses, including rape, stemming from a 23-year period of abuse. His wife, Eleanor, was found to have aided and abetted him by ignoring some of the abuse but was too ill to stand trial. The crimes involved two victims when they were children and included one count of rape, 13 counts of indecent assault, and four counts of gross indecency.
He was arrested and charged in 2024. During the trial, Donaldson denied the charges, which he described as "unbelievable," but a jury reached a guilty verdict in July. He has indicated his intention to appeal the convictions.
The court heard that his offenses included kissing one victim, identified as Victim A, and engaging in other inappropriate touching when she was of primary school age. The second victim, Victim B, was raped by Donaldson when she was also in primary school and was indecently assaulted on nine occasions, including once in the presence of his wife.
Victim impact statements detailed the long-term effects of the abuse. Victim A described experiencing ongoing anxiety, nightmares, and extremely low self-worth, growing up feeling "dirty and ashamed" and carrying significant anger. Victim B stated that the abuse had impacted every relationship she has had and expressed a wish not to be afraid at night.
Sentencing Donaldson at Newry Crown Court, Judge Paul Ramsey described the case as "disturbing" and noted that Donaldson had "stoutly" denied his guilt and shown a lack of responsibility and empathy for his victims. The judge highlighted that Donaldson had "doubled down on his denials" since his conviction and was assessed as a medium risk of reoffending. "There has not been, and doubtless will not be, one word of regret, apology or shame from this man," the judge remarked, adding that Donaldson had experienced a "catastrophic descent into disgrace."
Judge Ramsey imposed an 11-year sentence for the offenses against Victim B and a four-year sentence for those against Victim A, with the sentences to run consecutively. Donaldson remained emotionless as he was returned to custody to begin his sentence.
Donaldson was first elected to Parliament in 1997 and served as the longest-serving Northern Ireland MP, representing Lagan Valley in County Down. He resigned as leader of the DUP following his conviction. The DUP has since initiated an independent review to examine what was known within the party about Donaldson's conduct. His knighthood was also revoked after the conviction.
