Former DSA Insider Details 'Frightening' Socialist Agenda, Silencing of Dissent

Jake Altman, who previously served on the executive board of the Boston chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), has voiced concerns about the organization's direction, describing its agenda as "frightening" and noting a pattern of silencing dissenting opinions. Altman stated that he sought a more pragmatic left-leaning option focused on economic policy but found the DSA increasingly resembling extreme groups he wished to avoid.

Altman recalled an incident in 2017 where Danny Fetonte, a prominent activist, was elected to the National Political Committee. Fetonte resigned shortly after his election, reportedly encouraging others to question their membership. His departure followed the DSA's discovery that Fetonte had worked for a police union, which Altman found "troubling."

Further concerns arose in 2019 when the DSA issued a statement regarding Venezuela. Altman characterized the statement as defending or apologizing for the Maduro regime. He stated that when he raised objections, suggesting the DSA should denounce Maduro and support democratic socialists and social democrats in Venezuela, his concerns were dismissed, and the regime was defended.

Altman also noted a current trend within the DSA where some members criticize figures like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, deeming them not sufficiently socialist. He perceives a fusion of traditional Marxist ideology with a "third worldism" that views the United States as inherently evil and its adversaries as having valid points.

"In [the] DSA right now, you've seen a marriage between more traditional Marxist utopianism and what you might call third worldism… boiling it down [it’s] this view that America is a unique evil in the world and that its enemies have a point," Altman said. He advised individuals with dissenting views to leave the organization, citing his belief that many such voices have already been silenced or have departed.
