Former Democratic Fundraiser Lindy Li Eyes Future Run After Criticizing Biden's Stance

Lindy Li, who previously raised significant campaign funds for President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, is contemplating a future political run after parting ways with the Democratic Party. Her departure stemmed from concerns about Biden's perceived decline during the 2024 election cycle, a stance she details in her recent book, "Unbroken."

Li, who described herself as a former Democratic insider turned party exile, expressed her ambitions for a future in politics, even considering a congressional bid. "I just knew that I was supposed to run for Congress. But I didn’t know I was supposed to do it at twenty-four years old," Li stated. She mused about potential future opportunities, suggesting, "President Rubio calls me in two years, four years, then there's an open seat in Pennsylvania for whatever reason. You know, I could solidify my hand on a hundred million dollars. I think few people could do a better job."

Her family's history, having fled persecution from the Chinese Communist Party, influenced her early life and political convictions. Li recounted her family's moves across the United States and credited her parents with instilling a strong work ethic, which she applied during her time as class president at Princeton, where she held the office for four consecutive years.

Li's path into politics was accelerated by the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, which prompted her to leave a career in finance. Despite her early political efforts, she never advanced past the primary stage in her two congressional runs as a Democrat. However, her fundraising capabilities garnered attention, leading her to raise substantial sums for the party in 2016 and 2018.

"I didn't intend to become a fundraiser. It's a lot of salesmanship, and I hated it. I hate it. And I also know I'm very good at it," Li said, describing how party leadership recruited her into the role. Her sense of loyalty, a defining characteristic, meant she would go to great lengths for those she felt deserved it. This loyalty allowed her to build relationships with prominent Democratic figures, including Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Senator Tammy Duckworth.

The turning point for Li came in 2024 when she felt the party was promoting the idea of Biden's continued fitness for office despite evident concerns about his cognitive abilities. Her book, "Unbroken," explores the party's internal discussions regarding Biden's age and what she perceived as a willful disregard for the political risks associated with it.

The fallout from her decision to speak out has been significant, leading to the severance of most of her relationships within the Democratic Party and costing her an eight-year romantic relationship. Li suggested that some former colleagues might understand the difficult position she was in, noting, "I think he's going to understand. I understand why he needed to throw me, you know, to the wolves."

Despite these challenges, Li maintains her commitment to honesty and loyalty, albeit now with a more pragmatic approach. "I think I would describe my worldview as realpolitik with Lindy characteristics," she said. "I'm no longer going to half-heartedly support anybody. I learned my lesson about Biden and Harris. So I'm just waiting."
