Former CIA Officer Faces Plea Hearing in Case Involving Alleged $40 Million in Gold Bars

A plea hearing has been scheduled for Tuesday for a former CIA officer accused of amassing approximately $40 million worth of gold bars, along with other valuables, at his Virginia residence. David Rush has been detained since June as a flight risk.

Rush faces charges of theft of public money and lying about his academic credentials and military experience, according to a federal complaint unsealed earlier this year. During the investigation, FBI agents discovered over 300 gold bars, estimated to be worth more than $40 million, at Rush's home.

Prosecutors allege Rush, a former Senior Executive Service level employee with a top secret-level clearance, fraudulently obtained an inflated salary and military leave by misrepresenting his qualifications and background. At a detention hearing, federal prosecutor Gavin Tisdale stated that Rush had made false claims, including posing as a doctor to some individuals and telling neighbors he was a pilot. Tisdale also noted that Rush invested in easily tradable commodities like Rolex watches, some of which were seized, and that many of his believed assets remain unaccounted for.

Additionally, Tisdale cited instances of undisclosed travel as evidence supporting the government's claim that Rush could not be trusted to appear for future legal proceedings. The prosecutor characterized Rush as being "in a world of trouble," alleging a pattern of "manipulation of classification" and "skirting of the rules," despite the current single charge of timecard fraud.

The plea hearing is scheduled for Tuesday at 1:15 p.m. ET in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia.
