A former child pop star and current yoga instructor is suing Singapore Airlines, alleging that a splinter from an in-flight meal damaged her vocal cords. Briohny Smyth, 44, claims she unknowingly swallowed a jagged wooden splinter from a chicken satay skewer served on a flight to Los Angeles on July 28, 2024.
According to a federal lawsuit filed in Los Angeles, Smyth experienced immediate pain, violent coughing, and choking sensations as she attempted to expel the object. She eventually dislodged a 1.5-inch wooden shard. The suit states that since the incident, Smyth has suffered from persistent throat discomfort, vocal fatigue, raspiness, tightness, and pain during prolonged speaking or singing.
An otolaryngologist reportedly found scarring and trauma to Smyth's vocal cords consistent with an injury from a sharp foreign object. The lawsuit highlights that Smyth's livelihood as a professional singer, performer, wellness educator, and public speaker substantially depends on the integrity of her voice.
Smyth is seeking damages for past and future medical expenses, loss of earnings and earning capacity, and emotional distress. The complaint also notes anxiety associated with eating and flying as a result of the incident. Singapore Airlines has stated they are unable to comment on pending litigation.
